Background:
Great Barr Primary was built in 1939. The main building consists of six classrooms, offices, a hall, a library with personal computers (PC's) and internet access, physiotherapy unit, toilet management facilities and a special educational needs (SEN) centre. Various huts house more classrooms and in 1995 a new dining hall and two more classrooms were built. The school aims to 'help young people develop personally, socially and intellectually, with confident physical co-ordination skills, knowledge and understanding'. The 'broad curriculum' is based on the core subjects of the National Curriculum. Great Barr is 'Birmingham's only completely inclusive primary school', catering for children with varying degrees of handicap from throughout the city's metropolitan area. The school has 26 children who are statemented for physical needs. The school offers 'a range' of sports activites during and after school. There is an 'exhaustive games programme' and it offers specialised coaching by Aston Villa Football Club, Warwickshire County Cricket Club, David Lloyd Tennis Centre, Birchfield Harriers Athletic Club and the Birmingham Bullets Basketball Team. Members of staff voluntarily run clubs out of school hours, offering badminton, rugby league, netball, tennis, cricket and football. Peripatetic staff come into school on a regular basis to offer tuition in woodwind, strings, brass and electronic keyboard. Children are involved in the Birmingham district orchestra and band. The school currently has two school choirs, with 120 children regularly attending the junior choir and 30 in the infants. The choirs are involved every Christmas with singing at various local old people's homes and with fundraising for the Childrens Society at Tesco's supermarket. In 1999 the school was awarded the Charter Mark.
