Background:
The school first opened in 1954 as Hawkesley Farm Junior and, after becoming a permanent fixture, the school was named after a city alderman and Lord Mayor. Situated on the south-west outskirts of Birmingham close to the Longbridge car factory, the school shares a 'large' greenfield site with its attached infant school and nursery school. The building has undergone 'much improvement' since its days as a temporary school and now includes eight classrooms, a general-purpose room and a hall. A library was also recently installed and the hall and toilet blocks have been refurbished. There are two hard surfaces and a large field for sports, and extra-curricular activities include drama, badminton, computers, choir, recorder and football. The school has received funding to modernise computer facilities, including network cabling and increased internet access. Pupils' art work has also been published in a booklet called 'A Different Story'. In 1999, the school received a business partnership award for links with the city supplies organisation, sponsored by the local business partnership. The school's language co-ordinator is 'heavily involved' with projects at the University of Birmingham linking the primary curriculum with development in literacy. Children from the school raise money for local and national charities on an annual basis.
