Background:

Built on the site of a medieval monastery, Coundon Court was the family home of George Singer founder of the Singer cycle and car factory. Coundon Court High was founded in 1953. Affectionately called the 'Old House', the original family building is still used for the English department, IT rooms and offices. In 1956, Coundon Court reorganised as a girls' comprehensive and in 1972 it amalgamated with Barker Butts Secondary Modern and became a mixed comprehensive. The site has been 'extensively' developed and boasts a large range of modern facilties. The school participates in Coventry 2000, a scheme which develops internet and intranet links between schools in the city in order to share resources and expertise. Coundon Court is also developing a system whereby pupils and staff use personal e-mail accounts to send work from home and within the school. In 1997 the school was awarded Investors in People status, the Schools Curriculum Award and the Sportsmark Gold Award and became a full technology college. It has since won the Sportsmark Gold Award a second time and is now a Beacon School and a training school for student teachers in association with Warwick University.
