Background:

Shireland Language College is an 11-19 inner city language college in the West Midlands. The college is situated in a linguistically and culturally diverse area. Students are able to study a full curriculum as well as a range of languages including French, German, Urdu, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and Spanish, supported by state of the art technology. A £1.6M Design block completed in December 2001 further enhanced the already excellent accommodation and allows the college to offer purpose-built facilities in each curriculum area. The college also has music and drama studios, seven laboratories, seven dedicated ICT rooms and a dining room. The city learning centre opened in September 2003 provides high specification equipment. There are superb sports facilities and the college offers all students a full range of activities including games, athletics, gymnastics, dance and swimming. Theatre and cinema visits take place regularly to enhance students' knowledge. There are teams for most sports, and music and arts activities that take place throughout the year, including a carnival, steel pan bands, choir and a rock band. In September 2002, the college has opened its sixth form. The college is committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment. It aims to develop in students their unique abilities and talents to the best interests of themselves and the society in which they live and to which they will contribute.
