Background:
This large school was founded in 1985, following the re-organisation of schools in Streetly. It occupies the buildings of the former Blackwood Middle School and therefore boasts facilities not usually available for infants and juniors. The 'challenging and stimulating' curriculum is sometimes adapted to make use of the school's 'pleasant' woodland surroundings. 'Considerable importance' is placed on academic achievement and the school believes it is making steady improvements. Children with special needs receive extra assistance, sometimes on an individual basis. The 'balanced' curriculum is broadened with initiatives such as the publication of a book of pupils' writings in conjunction with the local WH Smith. Parental support is always sought, particularly in reinforcing the value of homework to their children. Links with the community include pupils regularly entertaining elderly and disabled groups, and a project assisting Birmingham Children's Hospital by designing, funding and maintaining a play area. There is a 'wide' range of extra curricular activities on offer, extending to orienteering and activity weekends.
