Background:

Founded in 1883 at Camp Hill in city centre; moved to current site in Kings Heath in southern Birmingham in 1956; occupies typical 1950s buildings surrounded by playing fields and wooded areas. New sports hall and drama studio in 2006. Entry strictly on academic merit, based on results of verbal and mathematical reasoning and non-verbal reasoning tests; applicants from Birmingham, Solihull, Redditch and Bromsgrove. Prides itself on the breadth of its social composition, with more than half of pupils from ethnic minorities. All laboratories refurbished; new ICT/science demonstration laboratory; all classrooms equipped with LCD projector and whiteboards, many of which are interactive; music block built in 1996; sports hall planned for 2006. Rugby, hockey and cricket among sporting achievements; fixtures arranged against all leading schools in Midlands. Musical productions, art and chess are among extra-curricular strengths. Shares extended and freshly-refurbished sixth-form centre and competition-class swimming pool with Camp Hill School for Girls. Combined specialist science college and humanities college status from 2004. Over-subscribed, with eight applications per place. DfES achievement award (2003).
