Background:
Originally founded as a middle school in 1975, Cheslyn Hay became a primary school in 1985. Situated in the south of Staffordshire, it is housed in a flat-roofed open-plan building set in 'superb' grounds with facilities which include a sports field, access to tennis courts and a conservation area. It shares its site with the adjacent high school. Pupils are grouped into houses and gain points through quizzes, sporting competitions and class work. Literacy and numeracy are stressed, but information technology is also important. All pupils have access to the internet and the school enjoys an 'international reputation' for its work in ICT. Extra-curricular activities are also seens as important and an 'ever widening' range includes aerobics, music, musical instruments, drama, French and table tennis. There is a school newspaper and a radio team. After-school care is provided from 3pm to 6pm and from 8.30am to 5.30pm during holidays. Anyone with an interest in the school can join the Friends of Cheslyn Hay Primary School. The school has strong community links and runs 'lifelong learning' courses for the local community, in addition to video conferencing courses in partnership with the University of Derby.
