Background:

Opened in 1938, Moat Farm Junior is accommodated in a large, single-storey building in attractive grounds approximately four miles from Birmingham City Centre. The school is situated in a housing estate in Sandwell, which, according to the 1991 census, is the third most deprived area outside London. Facilities include an extremely large library, information and communications technology (ICT) suite, disabled access/facilities, gymnasium, hall, three playgrounds and fields. However, the school is also known for its unique museum which contains hundreds of artefacts, and for its extraordinary themed rooms which include a castle dungeon internet room, a temple of doom IT room and a lunar landscape special needs room. The school hosts the children's university Sandwell campus and 43 pupils aged from seven to 10 study GCSE mathematics on Sunday mornings. It was also a national pilot school for the literacy project, numeracy project and National Grid for Learning (NGfL). It is recognised as an IT centre of excellence by the Teacher Training Agency and the school's ICT teacher won the 1999 Teacher Award. Excursions form part of pupils' studies and extra-curricular activities include choir, football, netball, cricket, rounders, art, recorder, chess, karate and brass band. The school aims to offer a happy, safe and secure environment in a family atmosphere.
