Part of Queen Mary's Foundation, which dates from 1554; occupies Victorian and early 20th-century buildings that formerly housed both boys' and girls' schools. Facilities include playing fields 10 minutes' walk away and excellent ICT facilities, with interactive whiteboards in most classrooms. Specialist language college status from 1996; three European languages taught from Year 7; all girls study two modern languages to GCSE from choice of French, German, Spanish and Japanese; all four languages available at A-level; Latin taught to all girls in Years 8 and 9. Half of all pupils taking instrumental lessons. After-school care, until 5pm. Over-subscribed, with eight applications per place. Beacon status (2001); Investor in People status (1998).
