Background:
Established in 1976 when two grammar schools amalgamated to form a mixed comprehensive; occupies a 20-acre site in suburban parkland to south of Solihull town centre; draws pupils from local villages as well as from prosperous suburbs. Pupils take up to 10 GCSEs, with Latin and Russian among the options. There is high level of participation in sport; options include gymnastics, tennis, swimming, athletics, hockey and cricket. Extra-curricular activities include the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, scout group, drama, music and residential activities. Foreign visits include exchange visits to Germany and France sporting visits, skiing trips to France, Switzerland and United States of America, trips to Italy for Latin and classical studies, to the Mediterranean for religious education, and to south of France for sailing. An 11-to-16 school from September 2006, but in collaboration with Solihull Sixth Form College will offer International Baccalaureate for post-16 students. Facilities include a learning resource centre (information technology centre and library), a new technology suite, an extensive computer network with internet access, a recording studio, a new business studies area, and substantial investment in personal computers and software. The mission of the school is to prepare young people to play an active part in a technologically mature society by providing them with exceptionally high-level skills, qualifications and attitudes that will benefit themselves and the wider community. Specialist technology college status from 1995. Over-subscribed, with four applications per place.
