Built in 1972, Welford Primary has 'reasonably modern', 'well-maintained' buildings and facilities on a site which also includes a nursery unit, community unit and small field for environmental studies. The school'serves a 'diverse multi-ethic community' in the heart of Handsworth and 'seeks to establish a partnership between the school, the children, the parents and the local community' to meet its aims of 'achievement, opportunity, community'. The school places 'great emphasis' on pupils' academic, artistic and sporting achievements. It offers a wide range of extra-curricular and outdoor education activities which draws on the children's talents in the arts, music, dance and sport, and has a 'rich vein of talented athletes', including Birmingham champions in 1996, 1998 and 1999. The school's regards its partnership with the local community as 'very important' and sees it as a way it can 'utilise the rich cultural and religious traditions of the wider Handworth community'.
