Background:

West Heath has a 'dynamic, unique environment' which has been described as 'totally unique, original, awe-inspiring and the best kept secret in the land'. Recent innovations include the creation of a 'visionary library' and the pupils' own publishing company in 1998. In 1999 the school unveiled its 'most dramatic improvement to date', a 'classroom of the future' with computer suite. This has led to a 'significant' partnership with a college of further education offering free courses for the community. West Heath is the only school in the country where all Year 6 pupils take CLAIT, the recognised information technology qualification. A variety of extra-curricular activities is offered such as drama, puppet-making, science, football, design technology, information technology, cross-country, football, basketball, netball, school newspaper and choir. The choir has won 'many awards', and has performed at the Birmingham Symphony Hall in addition to local hospitals and events for the elderly. The netball team has been league champion for the last three years and many extra-curricular activities are supported by other organisations such as Birmingham Football Club and Birmingham Bullets basketball team. There is also a breakfast club and an after-school homework club. The school is 'renowned' for its support of charities which include an initiative by the local church to build a school in a deprived area of Africa.
