Background:

The school was opened in 1950 in the Hill Top area of Sandwell to serve two new housing estates, though children now travel in from outside the catchment area. The school grounds boast a 'sizeable' green area and sports fields. Indoor facilities include a new computer suite with internet and video conferencing access, in addition to computers in all classrooms. The curriculum is 'differentiated' to meet each child's ability and there is a co-ordinator to assist those with special needs. Since much construction work is taking place in the neighbourhood, the school is involved in planning and landscaping projects to restore the natural habitats alongside these new buildings. There is 'heavy' involvement in outdoor education, with 'numerous' visits each year to outward bound and environmental education centers, which are seen as benefiting social skills between different year groups. All pupils have swimming lessons, and the school's 'excellent' sporting record includes local successes in gymnastics, soccer and cricket. There are 'many' extra-curricular activities on offer. Links with businesses bring financial support and expertise to the school. There is a 'strong partnership' between parents and teachers and the Parents' and Friends' Association mostly raises funds to purchase equipment.
