Background:

Wolverhampton Girls' High School opened in 1911 as a county school for girls from Wolverhampton and Staffordshire. It is located in a red-brick building in west Wolverhampton. Facilities include a technology building opened in 1993, a science block opened in 1995, six tennis courts, two hockey pitches and three netball courts. A new sports hall opened in 2003 together with additional performing arts facilities. Pupils have represented town and county in athletics, hockey, netball, swimming and tennis. A wide range of instrumental lessons are available, as well as choirs, musical groups and ensembles, from senior orchestra to quartets and trios. Drama, public-speaking, history, languages and science clubs are also offered. Trips abroad are arranged during the academic year, most recently to Russia, France, Germany and Peru. Russian and Japanese are taught from Year 7. Multi-media language suite facilities are in use. The post-16 curriculum has been extended via a consortium link with nearby schools. The Young Enterprise Company won the area competition and the Engineering in Education team successfully completed their project working with a local company. Specialist language college status. Before-school care, from 8.15am; after-school care, until 5pm. Over-subscribed, with nearly five applications per place. Beacon status (2002); Investor in People status (2005); DfES achievement award (2002, 2003). Ethos: 'The school promotes shared values of tolerance, honesty, loyalty and mutual respect, caring for the needs of the indivudal and valuing the talents of all. Students are expected to do their best in personal behaviour as well as academic work and are provided with an ordered, secure and supportive environment in which to do so'.
