Background:
Bournville Junior School was founded in 1906 as the personal gift of George Cadbury, to complete the village of Bournville. It is housed in a Grade II listed building, which boasts many distinctive architectural and decorative features including murals, carvings and a nationally famous carillon and tower. The school prides itself on its reputation for citizenship. Information and communications technology (ICT) is seen as another strength and Bournville is acknowledged as a centre of expertise to advise other schools. Children are also encouraged to learn and speak foreign languages. Year 6 pupils have a weekly French lesson and all children can join the French and Spanish clubs. There are two choirs and a school orchestra, and other extra-curricular activities include residential trips, a debating society, drama, and sports. In 1998 the school was awarded the Birmingham Business Partnership Award. The school aims to provide a caring and purposeful environment in which the individual needs and abilities of each child are recognised and developed to enable him/her to reach their full potential.
