Background:

Built in 1909, Colmore Junior is rich in history, having been a boys' school, mixed junior school, senior girls' department and even a military hospital during the First World War. The junior and infant schools are run by separate staff and headteachers in two buildings on the same site, and the two 'work closely together to provide Colmore children with continuity and progression across the key stages'. A networked computer suite with 16 workstations was recently added and Year 5 and 6 classrooms will soon be linked to the school's intranet. Links are fostered with local artists, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Birmingham Royal Ballet, which has included Colmore in its Dance and Rock project. A specialist teacher takes music lessons, organises the orchestra and runs two choirs. Other extra-curricular activities include boys and girls mixed football, cricket, netball, cross country running and the school currently holds the girls' four-a-side country championship title. Thoughout the year, pupils raise money for local and national charities. Colmore is oversubscribed.
