Background:

John Willmott School, founded by Alderman John Willmott of Sutton Coldfield, was opened in 1957 as a co-educational grammar school in an award winning building. In 1974 it became a comprehensive school, determined to maintain its excellent record of achievement and to meet the needs of a full range of pupils within the local community of Sutton Coldfield. In 2000 the school was granted 'Technology College' status, thus setting it up to become a school of the 21st century. Since its designation as a Specialist Technology College two years ago the school has invested heavily in the latest ICT equipment to provide excellent facilities for teaching and learning. It now has 225 computers in school, all running the latest software. Its newly completed mathematics block has six of the latest interactive whiteboards, and it has four more in other curriculum areas. In addition John Willmott's facilities include: eight science laboratories, two purpose-built and six refurbished; purpose designed business suite, purpose-built drama studio; art suite housing ceramics, fine art three D and photographic dark rooms; music suite with private practice rooms; new school library with CD ROM and internet access, two gymnasia; superb grounds, sports field and tennis courts adjoining the school building. These facilities, combined with top quality teaching, mean that its students are making better progress than ever. In the last two years its Key Stage 3 examination results have increased, and GCSE results have gone up by 6 per cent, and 'A' level results have shown a significant improvement. The school provides excellent extra-curricular opportunities to enable students to develop existing talents and discover new ones. All students are valued as individuals and encouraged and supported to succeed in the widest possible range of achievements. The school offers a challenging but supportive environment for its pupils.
