Background:
Sacred Heart Catholic School was founded in 1904 by the Catholic archdiocese of Birmingham and moved to its present site in the late 1960s. The school is in the Handsworth ward of Birmingham, 'one of the poorest one per cent of wards in the country'. 'The school intake reflects the area in which it is situated in terms of free school meals, ethnic minority pupils, parents unemployed and other factors of social deprivation. In spite of this the school has always produced high academic performance from its pupils.' Sacred Heart enjoys a 'very strong sporting side and an extremely successful school-home association'. The school is about 50 per cent Catholic.
