Background:

St John and Monica Catholic Primary School was opened in 1980 with amalgamation of St John's Catholic Primary, originally founded in Balsall Heath in 1911, and St Monica's Catholic Primary, originally founded in Moseley in 1970. It is now situated in the Moseley area of South Birmingham, occupying one of the leafiest school sites in the West Midlands. It consists of vast majority of pupils at the multi-cultural, multi-faith Catholic primary come from inner-city area of Balsall Heath, percentage of children receiving free school meals and those with English as an additional language are both well above the national average, performance of children from Afro-Caribbean backgrounds and of children for whom English is an additional language is described as very high. It has close links with Bishop Challoner Catholic School Sports College and specialist teachers' work within school. SS John and Monica Catholic Primary School provides a broad and balanced curriculum with Christ at the centre expressed in how the school treat each other. From the moment a child starts with the reception class the school has the greatest expectations for them. The school is a Catholic school with a large number of other faiths' children.
