Background:

Established in 1860, this over-subscribed school attracts pupils from 'all over the world', as their parents move into the area to work at the local university, colleges or hospital. 'St Mary's popularity is based on its Christian ethos which means the school not only sustains high standards of achievement but also has the reputation for valuing and meeting each child's individual needs.'The 'light, modern' school building which has housed the school since 1967 is situated on 'secluded, well protected' grounds containing two playgrounds, a number of grass areas and a pond. Indoor facilities include a hall and library, and computers in every classroom. 'Very good working relationships' exist with parents, who are treated as 'co-educators'. There is a special educational needs (SEN) co-ordinator and classroom assistant to support pupils with learning difficulties both in the classroom and by withdrawing them individually. The range of extra-curricular activities includes recorder, art chess, French, and information and communications technology (ICT). All Year 3 and 4 pupils learn to swim. St Mary's Association exists mainly to raise funds for the school, and children are encouraged to raise money for different charities. 'Strong' links have been developed with local schools, businesses and churches. St Mary's whas been awarded the 'Quality Mark' by the Basic Skills Agency.
