Background:
The original school opened in 1937 and was two single-sex secondary modern schools. In 1974 it became a 12-16 mixed comprehensive and two additional buildings were added for science and technology teaching. In 1991, again through reorginisation we became 11-16 mixed comprehensive and the arts block was built. In September 1996 we opened our Post 16 centre on site in partnership with Dudley College (16-19 sixth form studies on site). We now have 1125 pupils in 11-16 school and 70 students in the post 16 centre. Thus we have doubled our numbers over the past 10 years. Dormanston is a very popular oversubscribed school. In August 1996 we were given 4 million from the lottery (Arts ands Sports) in order to build a 5.5 million Arts/ Sports Complex. This will consist of 350 seat Theatre, an Art Gallery, a Sculpture Gallery, a Cafe, Bar, Cybercafe, Fitness Centre, Sports Hall and 4 Floodlit Netball Courts. This is for the community of Sedgkey district and will open in Autumn 1999.
