Opened in 1883; housed in impressive Victorian buildings close to centre of Birmingham; boasts history of outstanding success in examination performance, sport, music and drama. Boys attend school from all parts of Birmingham and beyond, producing 'rich social and ethnic mix of pupils'. Aston 2000 campaign enabled new sports hall, music suite and language block to be built; school also fully networked for ICT to be available in all classrooms; two 26-station specialist IT laboratories and a 32-station language laboratory; library annexe houses 12 open-access computers; all ICT stations have internet access. Specialist sports college status from 2000, re-designated in 2004. Over-subscribed, with seven applications per place. Sportsmark Gold.
