Background:
One of five voluntary aided schools of the King Edward VI Foundation in Birmingham, King Edward VI Five Ways School was founded in 1883 at Five Ways in central Birmingham. It moved in 1958 to its present 30-acre site on the southwest tip of Birmingham, bordering Bartley Reservoir. Originally a boys' school, it became co-educational in 1998 and is now the largest co-educational grammar school in the West Midlands. A building programme has accompanied this expansion, with new science laboratories and ICT rooms, extended and refurbished library accommodation, new kitchen and dining facilities, new two-storey teaching block with art and technology facilities and specialist rooms for modern languages and English, and a large sports hall with pavilion. In academic terms, the school is within the top 25 per cent of grammar schools and in the top five of co-educational state schools. Extra-curricular activities include rugby, cricket, cross-country, athletics, drama and music. Specialist humanities college status from September 2004. It has built a number of international links in Tanzania, India, South Africa, New Zealand and United States. Specialist humanities college status. Over-subscribed, with 12 applications per place; more than one-third of pupils come from outside Birmingham. British Council international status (2006). Sportsmark (2004); Investor in People status (2006); DfES achievement award (2002); training school status (2004). Ethos: 'Traditional values in a modern world; a cutting-edge school that values its traditions and scholarship; co-educational excellence'.
